5 Ways To Keep Kids Safe in a Pandemic

Every parent is concerned about the health and wellbeing of his or her child. The COVID-19 pandemic has introduced new levels of worry, however, and with it, new strategies and methods by which to stay safe. Here’s what you need to know.

Disinfect the Home

Using household disinfectant, clean commonly handled surfaces. Light switches, doorknobs, faucets, countertops, phones, remote controls and keyboards are objects to focus on. It also is advised to frequently replace and clean hand towels and dish rags.

Practice Hand Washing

Kids like to be dirty, but during a pandemic it’s important that they keep their hands clean. Hands should be washed vigorously with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, especially before and after coughing or sneezing, after using a restroom, when eating or preparing food and when out in public.

Stock Protective Equipment

Even though people are encouraged to shelter in place, sometimes individuals need to leave the home. When that happens, it’s important that they make use of personal protective equipment. Wearing items like a n95 respirator mask, gloves and eye protection helps keep you and others safe, so make sure your home is provisioned with such equipment before disaster strikes.

Keep Your Distance

One of the most popular phrases in the world today is “social distancing.” Adults and kids alike are asked to stay at least six feet away from individuals who do not live in your household. Doing so helps to prevent the spread of germs.

Maintain Healthy Routines

Being stuck at home doesn’t mean kids should be glued to the couch. If you want them to stay healthy, be sure they get plenty of exercise, keep regular sleep habits and eat a nutritious diet. Social isolation can be stressful, so stay in touch with friends and family via phone and video chats and arrange virtual play dates or socially distant, outdoor activities for kids.

It is said an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. As the world waits for a COVID-19 vaccine, keep your kids safe by preventing the spread of disease.
